Eclipse Building

Explore stories of the sea, science and discovery

The Eclipse Building is one of the Museum of the Great Southern’s main exhibition spaces. Here you’ll find long-term displays that share stories of life along the coast, including the Lighthouse Exhibition, the Fishing Collection, and the striking Fish Wall.

At the centre of the building is the remarkable Eclipse Island Optic. This lighthouse lens system is made up of three towering glass lenses, each around three metres high. The optic rotates smoothly on a bed of mercury, just as it once did in service, sending light across the building and offering a glimpse into the technology that guided ships safely along Western Australia’s coastline.

On the lower floor, you’ll find the Discovery Centre — a lively space dedicated to hands-on learning. Visitors of all ages can explore, investigate and take part in interactive activities. Programs change throughout the year, so there is always something new to discover.

The mezzanine level hosts the Museum’s temporary exhibitions, featuring a rotating program of displays that highlight different stories, collections and ideas.
