The Lighthouse Optic

A powerful lens guiding ships through the night

At the centre of Eclipse Island Lighthouse was a remarkable piece of technology known as the lighthouse optic. This large glass lens system was designed to capture and focus light into a powerful beam that could be seen many kilometres out at sea, helping ships safely navigate the dangerous southern coastline.

The optic consisted of several large curved glass panels arranged around a central light source. These panels acted like magnifying lenses, concentrating and directing the light into a narrow beam. As the optic slowly rotated, the beam swept across the ocean in a repeating pattern. Sailors could recognise this pattern and identify which lighthouse they were seeing, helping them determine their position along the coast.

The light itself was produced using vaporised kerosene, which burned inside an incandescent mantle to create an intense white glow. This bright light was then amplified by the surrounding lenses, creating a signal that could be seen from far out at sea.

The lenses used in the Eclipse Island Lighthouse were particularly impressive in scale. The optic measured around three metres high, making it one of the larger examples of lighthouse lens systems used in Australia. The entire assembly sat on a carefully engineered pedestal that contained the machinery needed to rotate the optic smoothly and steadily.

Because the lenses were delicate and valuable, they were enclosed in a strong metal lantern room at the top of the lighthouse tower. This housing protected the optic from the powerful winds, rain and salt spray that regularly battered the island.

Today, the original Eclipse Island optic is displayed inside the Eclipse Building at the Museum of the Great Southern. Illuminated once again, it allows visitors to experience the scale and beauty of the technology that once guided ships safely along this rugged coastline.
