School Room
A glimpse into life and learning in early Western Australia
Step inside the School Room, a small one-room schoolhouse like those once found in many country towns across Western Australia. In the early days of settlement, a single teacher often taught children of many different ages in the same classroom.
Schools like this were an important part of rural communities. Teachers worked hard to help children learn reading, writing and arithmetic, often with limited resources and in very simple conditions. The School Room at the Museum is a tribute to those pioneer teachers and the students who learned here.
Today, the School Room continues to be a place for learning. It is used for school holiday activities, special events and education programs, and is also home to the Museum’s Community Exchange Library, where visitors can share and discover books.
