Ship’s Bell from the Batavia
Echoes of a Doomed Voyage
This bell once rang out across the decks of the Batavia a proud ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In 1629, on her maiden voyage, Batavia struck a reef in the Abrolhos Islands and was wrecked before dawn.
On board were officers, sailors, soldiers, and civilians – 341 people bound for the Dutch colonies in the East Indies. The voyage was meant to take eight months. Instead, it ended in disaster, mutiny, and massacre.
Recovered centuries later, this bell is one of the few surviving objects that still ‘speaks’ from that fateful night. Though it will never ring again, its presence tolls a warning from the past.
