New Discoveries from the Batavia Story

Collection
Praying and Playing – West Wallabi Island
Faith and Leisure After the Wreck
These small personal items were likely carried ashore by survivors of the Batavia wreck in 1629. The metal clasp may have come from a bible—similar clasps and a book board have also been found at the main wreck site, suggesting that at least some survivors held onto items of faith.
The square pieces of lead may have served as weights, gaming pieces, or tokens, offering a glimpse into moments of leisure and diversion amid the harsh realities of survival on the Abrolhos Islands. Together, they reflect both the spiritual and everyday lives of those stranded far from home.
