Burrowing Bees
Tiny diggers with a BIG job!
Did you know that not all bees live in hives? These amazing burrowing bees build their homes underground!
They dig tiny tunnels in sandy soil where each mother bee makes a cosy nest for her babies. Even though you might see lots of them flying around together, they aren’t interested in people, they’re busy finding flowers, collecting pollen, and helping plants grow.
🐝 Bee Facts!
- 🏡 They live in little underground tunnels, not hives.
- 🌼 They help pollinate flowers, trees and many of the foods we eat.
- 😊 They are gentle and very rarely sting.
- 👀 Male burrowing bees can’t sting at all!
- 🇦🇺 Australia is home to more than 1,600 species of native bees.
Can you spot a bee home?
Look closely at the ground. A burrowing bee’s home looks like a tiny hole about the size of a pencil, often with a little pile of sand around the entrance.
