Black‑and‑white photograph of a large aircraft carrier entering a harbour, escorted by several tugboats. The ship’s flight deck is crowded with aircraft and equipment, and smoke rises from its funnel. People line the deck along the port side, watching the approach toward the breakwater and port facilities. The sea is calm, with another vessel visible on the horizon under a lightly overcast sky.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK

Black‑and‑white photograph of a propeller‑driven naval aircraft flying low over an aircraft carrier at sea. The aircraft, marked with Royal Navy roundels and the number “07,” is captured in level flight above the ship’s starboard side. Below, the carrier’s flight deck is lined with parked aircraft and personnel, with the island superstructure rising prominently above the deck. The surrounding ocean appears calm under an overcast sky. — Fairey Gannet AEW Public Domain

Black‑and‑white photograph of a naval strike aircraft approaching an aircraft carrier for landing. The aircraft, with its landing gear extended and wings spread, hovers just above the ship’s flight deck as waves churn below. The deck markings, including a large landing circle, are clearly visible in the foreground. The sea behind the aircraft appears rough, with whitecaps stretching toward the horizon under an overcast sky. — Buccaneer Eagle 1971 Public Domain
