Whaling in WA

Explore the history of the whaling industry in WA

Reflect on the story of the whaling industry in Western Australia, from the early days when whaling was carried out using harpoons from small boats to the introduction of harpoon guns, steam-driven whaling boats and factory ships. Such developments in the industry made large scale commercial fishing so efficient that many whale species came very near to extinction. Commercial whaling in Australia ceased in 1978 with the closure of Australia's last whaling station, the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company, in Albany.
