Lighting the Way
Lights help to ensure the safe navigation of shipping in and out of the harbour.
The earliest lights were beacon fires burnt on the mainland. This sometimes created havoc for shipping as domestic fires were often mistaken for beacons.
The system of lights and beacons was improved as the harbour developed.
Today the port's navigational aids can be operated remotely.
