Customs duties are taxes imposed on imported goods. During the colonial period they provided the largest source of income for Western Australia.

The Customs organisation was also involved in port operations, and controlled the movement of cargo.

In 1901, the Australian colonies federated and Customs became a Commonwealth function.

Today the Australian Customs Service collects duties and works with other agencies to prevent the illegal entry of goods and persons into Australia.
