Honouring the Lives Lost in the Goldfields
As you entered through the front gate, you may have noticed the Memorial Wall, a solemn tribute to the 1,452 miners who lost their lives in mining accidents across the Goldfields. Mining was an incredibly dangerous profession, and in some years, the death toll was staggering—one year alone saw 43 men added to the wall. The risks were so severe that working underground was often compared to fighting a war, where every shift could be life-threatening.
Visitors can search a digital database of names to learn more about the miners memorialised on the wall. This resource allows families, historians, and the general public to explore the stories behind the names, tracing the lives of those who helped build the Goldfields and understanding the sacrifices they made in pursuit of Western Australia’s gold.
