Outdoor Washing

Piccadilly Street, Kalgoorlie

Washing clothes outdoors in Kalgoorlie’s harsh climate was a physically demanding task, especially in the blistering heat and dust-laden winds of the Goldfields. Without running water, washing day often began with hauling heavy buckets from a rainwater tank or well, heating water over a wood stove or copper boiler, and scrubbing garments by hand on a ribbed washboard. Clothes were then rinsed, blued, and wrung out before being pegged onto a wire clothesline, where they dried quickly in the arid air. However, dust storms were a constant challenge—coating freshly washed sheets in red dirt and sometimes forcing the miner’s wife to start the process all over again. Despite the effort, outdoor washing was an essential part of life, and many women worked together, sharing the load and exchanging news while tackling one of the most grueling household chores of the week.
