Long drop
Piccadilly Street, Kalgoorlie
A corrugated tin long drop was a common sight in Kalgoorlie’s miner’s cottages, offering a simple but essential outdoor toilet solution. Constructed from corrugated iron sheets, it provided little insulation, making it unbearably hot in summer and icy cold in winter. Positioned over a deep pit, it had a wooden seat and lid, with lime or ash used to control odors. The flimsy walls rattled in strong winds, and the structure offered little privacy or comfort. At night, a trip to the long drop—armed with a candle or lantern—was often avoided unless absolutely necessary!
