Giant echidna
The giant echidna, standing before you, is a remarkable reminder of Australia’s prehistoric past. Tens of thousands of years ago, creatures in Australia were much larger than their modern counterparts. Kangaroos towered at incredible heights, and wombats were nearly the size of Volkswagens—a truly incredible sight! The giant echidna was no exception, growing significantly larger than the small, spiky creatures we see today.
One striking difference is the fur seen on these ancient echidnas. This feature suggests that the climate was once much cooler, allowing these larger animals to thrive. However, as the environment grew hotter and drier, many species had to adapt or face extinction. Over time, echidnas shrunk in size, evolving into the much smaller, spikier, and undeniably cuter echidnas that still roam Australia today.
