Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Kalgoorlie Branch Banner
CH1974.111
This is a double-sided silk banner of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Kalgoorlie Branch, made in 1906 by G. Tutill of 83 City Road, London. The banner comes with its original carrying poles and packing box. It was collected from The Trades Hall, Kalgoorlie, with the donation arranged by Mr. D. Spence.
In October 1981, the Conservation Department inadvertently destroyed the storage box. However, the label from inside the box was sent to Perth for photography before its loss.

About the Maker – George Tutill
George Tutill’s company specialised in banner-making and ceremonial regalia for unions, friendly societies, and similar organizations in both Britain and overseas. The Tutill workshop in London was renowned for its craftsmanship, and it had even patented a technique for impregnating woven silk banners with rubber, allowing them to be rolled for easier storage and transport.
It is a testament to the prosperity of the Kalgoorlie Branch that they were able to commission a high-quality Tutill banner, reflecting their strength and standing within the labor movement.
