Dromedary Camel Skull

With a single distinctive hump, the dromedary camel was a true ‘Ship of the Desert,’ helping to explore and connect Australia’s vast, arid interior in the late 1800s. These camels were imported to carry water, supplies, and goods across landscapes where horses and oxen struggled.

Once their work was done, many were released into the wild. These hardy survivors thrived, and today Australia is home to the world’s largest population of wild camels—nearly a million strong.

This skull is a reminder of the resilience and vital role of camels in shaping Australia’s outback history.
