Coolgardie Safe

A Clever Outback Refrigerator

Before the days of electric refrigeration, people in the hot and dry Goldfields had to find creative ways to keep their food fresh. The Coolgardie Safe was a simple yet highly effective solution, using the power of evaporation to cool perishable items.

This safe consists of a metal rectangular tray at the bottom, supporting a metal frame wrapped in hessian. A smaller tray sits at the top, where water was poured in to soak the hessian covering. As the water slowly evaporated, it cooled the air inside the safe, keeping food fresher for longer.

The seven strips of grey blanket would have originally helped to retain moisture, improving the cooling effect. Inside, a metal shelf provided storage for items like meat, dairy, and vegetables, while a full-length door on one side allowed easy access.

Invented in Coolgardie in the 1890s, this simple yet effective design became a staple in homes across outback Australia, proving essential for survival in the harsh Goldfields climate. Today, it remains a brilliant example of innovation, showing how early settlers adapted to the extreme conditions of the region.
