Water Filter

A Misguided Solution to Goldfields Water Woes

Access to clean drinking water was a major challenge in the Goldfields, and water filters like this one, produced by the Silicated Carbon Filter Company, were a common sight in homes and businesses. With water supplies often contaminated and of poor quality, these filters were marketed as an essential tool for purifying drinking water.

However, despite their widespread use, these filters were ultimately ineffective against disease. A scathing 1894 report from the British Medical Journal reviewed this particular model and concluded:

“None of these filters possess the power of intercepting micro-organisms… We must conclude that these filters not only confer no protection, but in all probability materially increase the risk of infection.”

Instead of improving water safety, these filters may have unknowingly contributed to the spread of disease, giving users a false sense of security. This artefact, donated by the Eastern Goldfields Historical Society (CH1974.244), serves as a reminder of the harsh realities faced by early Goldfields residents and the desperate measures taken to secure drinkable water.
