Noisy Scrub-bird Nest and Egg
A rare bird's nesting habits revealed
Welcome to the fascinating world of the Noisy Scrub-bird, a remarkable ground-dwelling bird known for its powerful song. Despite its limited flight abilities, this bird can be heard from a great distance, making it a unique resident of the Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve.
The exhibit showcases a nest that has been carefully cut to reveal its papier-mâché-like interior, complete with an egg. This nest is crafted from rushes, leaves, twigs, and bark. The lining resembles thin cardboard, composed of decayed rushes, providing a safe haven for the single egg the bird lays.
Once thought extinct, the Noisy Scrub-bird was rediscovered in 1961 in an area slated for development. Fortunately, the land was preserved as the Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve in 1967, safeguarding the bird's habitat. Thanks to conservation efforts, the population has grown, but the bird's range remains limited.
