Homer White's US Navy Uniform

Honoring a Local Hero's Legacy

The Museum of the Great Southern proudly displays Homer White's U.S. Navy submariner uniform tunic, a significant piece on loan from the Albany Historical Society. This uniform represents not only White’s service during World War Two but also his enduring commitment to honouring his fellow submariners.

In 2002, Homer White assisted Commander Rich Tilghman in unveiling a memorial stone at Lawley Park, dedicated to the submariners of World War Two. This memorial, sponsored by Homer, now resides at the Princess Royal Fortress, serving as a lasting tribute to their bravery.

Homer’s contributions to Albany extend beyond his military service. As a beloved local figure, he was a Justice of the Peace, received a British Empire Medal, and was honored as Albany's Citizen of the Year. His dedication was further recognized in 2003 with an American Legion Citation for Meritorious Service, commemorating his efforts to preserve the legacy of submariners in Albany since the 1940s.
