Larkins Figurehead History

A relic of maritime history

Welcome to the Museum of the Great Southern, where history comes alive through fascinating artifacts like the Larkins figurehead. This remarkable piece was once part of the coal hulk Larkins, which met its end in 1876. After the ship was dismantled, the figurehead found a new home outside a boarding house on Stirling Terrace, adding a unique charm to the area.

Later, the figurehead was moved to Candyup, a property nestled along the scenic Kalgan River. There, it stood proudly on an entrance fencepost, welcoming visitors with its storied past. This piece of maritime history was generously donated to the museum by Mrs. D.A.P West from the estate of H.C. Poole.

The Larkins figurehead serves as a tangible connection to the region’s shipping heritage, sparking imaginations and offering a glimpse into the past. We hope you enjoy discovering its story as much as we enjoy sharing it with you.
