Reflections of Country: Celebrating Drone Tubes
Discover the vibrant connection between Minang culture and traditional drone tubes, crafted by esteemed artists Jack Williams and Grant Pickett.
Welcome to our exploration of the "Reflections of Country" exhibit, where we delve into the artistry and cultural significance of drone tubes. Crafted by the talented Mr. Leonard 'Jack' Williams and Mr. Grant Pickett, these pieces are a testament to the rich heritage and evolving traditions of the Minang people.
Mr. Williams, honoured as a State Living Treasure in 2004, has made significant contributions as an indigenous craftsman. His expertise and dedication to preserving cultural practices are evident in his work. Mr. Pickett, a renowned artist in his own right, has beautifully embellished the larger drone tube with his unique artistic vision.
Originally, drone tubes were crafted by Aboriginal communities in northern Australia. However, the Minang people, with their extensive kin networks, have embraced and incorporated these instruments into their cultural practices. The designs you see before you are more than decorative; they are vibrant reflections of cultural connection and continuity.
Acquired in 2004, these artefacts carry not only the artistic imprint of their creators but also the stories and traditions of the Minang people. We invite you to reflect on the cultural stories embedded in these works and to appreciate the harmony between past and present that they represent.
