Mokare’s curiosity

Menang people found the English practice of collecting specimens of Menang Country a puzzling activity. In 1830 Menang leader, Mokare, collected samples of moss with Captain Collet Barker, showing him where to find the moss and what season to look for them. Deakin University historian Tiffany Shellam describes this collaborative process.
