Rock Lobster Sack

A Fishing Link to Beacon Island

This rock lobster sack was found on Beacon Island in 1986. Stencilled on the bag is “D45,” the registration number of a fishing boat from Dongara.

Such sacks were used to store and transport lobsters from the pots to the processing facilities or directly to market. This one is a reminder of the modern fishing activity that has taken place around the Abrolhos Islands, alongside the area’s much older and more tragic Batavia history.
