Greater Stick-nest Rat
Master Builder of the Desert
The greater stick-nest rat (Leporillus conditor) is an expert nest-builder, weaving sticks and soft plant material into sturdy shelters. Once common in the dry regions of Western Australia, it is now extinct in the State. However, conservation efforts have seen animals reintroduced from South Australia to predator-controlled reserves in the Mid West, offering hope for its return to the wild.
