Newmarracarra limestone
Shells from a Jurassic Sea
This limestone formed in a warm, shallow sea about 160 million years ago, during the age of the dinosaurs. Scattered through the rock are fossilised shells, including the ribbed shells of Trigonia moorei an extinct species once common on the sea floor.
Similar Trigonia fossils have been found in many parts of the world from the same time period, revealing just how widespread these creatures were in ancient oceans. The rock and its fossils offer a snapshot of Western Australia’s Jurassic marine life, preserved for millions of years.
