Midshipman’s Dirk, Scabbard and Belt
A Ceremonial Blade, A Family Memory
This ceremonial dirk belonged to Midshipman Thomas Edgar Davis, presented to him in 1936 when he achieved his naval rank. For the Davis family, it became more than a symbol of service, it was part of their everyday lives and memories.
A proud photo of Edgar in uniform watched over family meals, and the dirk, carefully stored in a cupboard, often came out for storytelling and childhood games. As his nephews Edgar and Tom Davis recall, “Uncle Edgar was always in our consciousness.”
Thomas Edgar Davis was lost with Sydney (II) in 1941. His dirk, now a treasured heirloom, carries both honour and heartbreak.
