Commemorative Medallion
Honouring Victory at Cape Spada
Before the tragedy off Western Australia’s coast, HMAS Sydney (II) had already made a name for herself. In July 1940, during the Battle of Cape Spada in the Mediterranean, Sydney sank the Italian cruiser Bartolomeo Colleoni a daring and celebrated victory.
When the ship returned to Sydney Harbour in February 1941, each crew member was presented with this commemorative medallion in honour of their service. This small token symbolised pride, achievement, and the bonds forged at sea, making its presence in this gallery all the more poignant, knowing what came next.
