Beaker Glass from the Zuytdorp

A Toast Lost to the Sea

Elegant and finely made, this glass beaker likely belonged to a high-ranking officer aboard the Zuytdorp. It was discovered near the stern of the wreck, where the officers’ quarters would have been, surprisingly intact despite the rough seas.

In 1988, museum diver Geoff Kimpton found it hidden beneath a heavy mass of concreted wreckage. Reaching blindly beneath the seabed, he felt something smooth and round, then carefully pulled out this remarkably well-preserved glass.

For centuries it lay undisturbed, surrounded by pewter plates, ceramics, weapons, and coins now offering a glimpse into the personal world of someone who never finished their voyage.
