Step Onto “Batavia’s Graveyard” Without Leaving the Museum

Beacon Island, part of the Houtman Abrolhos, is a place of haunting history. Known as Batavia’s Graveyard, it was the site of brutal events following the wreck of the Batavia in 1629. Many survivors were murdered here under the orders of mutineer Jeronimus Cornelisz, and archaeological digs have uncovered some of the earliest European burials in Australia.

With Beacon Virtual, you can explore the island as it is today, without stepping onto its fragile environment. Wander among the low scrub and sandy beaches, visit excavation sites, and see where key moments in the Batavia story unfolded. It’s the closest you can get to this remote and protected place while keeping its heritage safe for future generations.
