Fishing Dinghy – Late 1950s

A Workhorse of the Rock Lobster Industry

Built by Ike Hollings, lighthouse keeper at Point Moore, this clinker-built dinghy is typical of the small boats once used in the fishing and rock lobster industries before modern engine-driven craft became common. Such dinghies served as supply vessels for larger wet-line fishing boats and were also used for inshore fishing.

Designed by naval architect Len Randall at Hollings’ request, the boat could be rowed with one bank of oars or skilfully “skulled” with a single oar over the stern.

Hollings donated the dinghy to the Western Australian Maritime Museum in March 1981. It was fully restored and repainted in 1984 with funds from the Commonwealth Wage Pause Job Creation Program.

Donated by Ike Hollings.
