New Discoveries at the Abrolhos
Rare species, healthy reefs, and shipwreck insights.
Michael Amor
A recent Western Australian Museum expedition to the Houtman Abrolhos Islands has uncovered a wealth of marine and maritime discoveries, from tiny, rarely seen species like a minuscule snail living on a sea urchin, to a temperate octopus sharing reefs with its tropical cousins. The team also confirmed the region’s corals remain healthy despite recent marine heatwaves and documented changes to historic shipwrecks such as the Batavia and Zeewijk. These images capture the biodiversity, history, and collaborative spirit that make the Abrolhos such a remarkable place.
