Grindstones
Essential tools for traditional food preparation
Grindstones are essential tools traditionally used to produce flour by grinding seeds from trees or grasses. These versatile implements also serve to pulp hard fruits or meats and crush ochres for paint-making.
The grindstone setup typically consists of two stones. The lower stone, known as the millstone or "Meeka" in the Gascoyne region, is a flat, rough rock. It provides a sturdy base for the grinding process. The upper stone, called a "Yunungguga," "Maragurdi," or "Mara," is smaller and smooth, often resembling stones found in riverbeds.
This simple yet effective technology has played a crucial role in various cultures by enabling the processing of natural resources into usable forms. Whether for sustenance through flour production or artistic expression through paint creation, grindstones have been invaluable across generations.
