Bell from Robertina

Ship's Bell from Robertina

Bronze

The date 1843 on the bell was the year the 213-ton brig Robertina was built at Greenock, Scotland. The bell helped to identify the wreck site, located on the Murray Reef in 1987 by diver Graham Anderton.

Leaving Fremantle with a cargo of timber, flour and whale oil intended for the Adelaide market, the vessel struck the uncharted reef - close to Coventry Reef - in the early evening of 2 November 1859. Robertina went down almost immediately, the crew and passengers barely having time to reach the boats before it sank.
