Zuytdorp's Anchor

Zuytdorp Anchor

Iron

This anchor was raised from the wreck of the Dutch Eastindiaman Zuytdorp by the WA Museum in March 1988. It is the largest anchor yet recovered from a shipwreck site in Western Australia and its size reflects the Zuytdorp's status as one of the largest class of vessels used by the VOC (United Dutch East India Company).

The missing fluke was probably crushed and broken off when the ship was wrecked at the foot of the cliffs which now bear Zuytdorp's name. The wooden anchor stock has long since disintegrated, like the timbers of the ship itself.

The Zuytdorp wreck site is still being investigated by Museum staff.
