A Ship's Bell

Ship's Bell (Rapid 1811)

As clear as a bell

This ship's bell was recovered in 1978 from a wreck at Point Cloates on the Ningaloo reef. A ship's bell is a very valuable object to the archaeologist because it usually bears the vessel's name. So when a bell is discovered on a shipwreck site the name of the unfortunate ship, in most cases, is known. This bell was one of the first objects discovered but as you can see, there is no name.

It took a further two seasons of diving, many hundreds of hours of sifting through clues and finally a trip to the other side of the world to eventually discover the identity of the mystery ship.
